Imagine looking up from your desk one morning and seeing a team of inspectors with badges. They're here to scour your workplace for illegal workers.

This scenario has become reality for many HR professionals across the country. Federal and state authorities have recently become much more aggressive about staging "enforcement sweeps"—unannounced workplace visits designed to uncover immigration law violations. While some sweeps are just routine reviews of your on-site personnel records, others grow into full-blown, top-to-bottom raids in which workers with questionable papers are detained and you're hit with major fines and legal fees. Even honest, well-meaning employers can get caught in the net.

Don't become a statistic. Join us for a comprehensive 90-minute audio conference on Sept. 12, when you'll learn the latest California-specific advice for preparing for a surprise enforcement sweep—and, even more importantly, what you can do to avoid triggering a sweep in the first place. Our legal expert will explain the dos and don'ts of documenting workers, checking their backgrounds, and reducing your legal and financial risks.

YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES WILL LEARN:

  • The most common immigration-related compliance mistakes employers make—and how to avoid them
  • Which immigration documents (such as I-9 forms) you must complete for your workers—and how long you need to keep those records on file
  • What to do if you think a worker is providing you with questionable or overtly fraudulent documentation
  • How to classify employees and independent contractors correctly in terms of their immigration status
  • The best methods for verifying work authorizations and screening applicants to avoid hiring undocumented workers
  • Your obligations and liabilities in California as an "employer sponsor"
  • How standard rules governing leaves, layoffs, and other HR issues apply to immigrant workers
  • What you can do when auditing your records to uncover and fix "red flags" that could trigger an enforcement sweep or other potentially costly consequences
  • How to deal with a workplace raid, if you find yourself in the middle of one—from which records you must disclose to the inspectors to what you should do—immediately—if workers are detained
