Many HR professionals agree, hands down, that California imposes more legal and regulatory burdens on employers than any other state in the country.

In 2007, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the California General Assembly kept that tradition alive by passing a wide range of new employment-related statutes. These changes will affect everything from minimum-wage levels and workers compensation benefit periods to the use of cell phones while driving and the ways you display employee data on pay stubs. And, a number of crucial state and federal court cases have been decided in the last 12 months as well.

Join us on Jan. 29 for this 90-minute audio conference, when we'll explain (in plain English) the brand-new laws, rules, and court cases governing California employers. You'll learn how to gauge whether these changes apply to your workplace, as well as practical steps you can take immediately to insure that you're complying as required. We'll discuss the most recent federal and California court rulings on topics such as pay bias and family and medical leave. And, we'll preview the hottest HR issues on the legislature's radar in 2008, so that you can get ready for new employment laws that may be coming down the road.

YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES WILL LEARN:

  • Which HR-related laws and regulations will change in California for 2008 and beyond (as well as effective strategies for complying with the new rules)
  • Why new "family responsibility discrimination" claims may be just the tip of the iceberg in dealing with family and medical leave concerns in 2008
  • How to manage the new increase in California's minimum wage levels (as well as the decrease in hourly wages for computer professionals)
  • Why you must now grant unpaid leave to the spouses or domestic partners of U.S. soldiers who are on leave from a combat zone
  • What you should discuss with your workers' compensation broker about the longer benefit periods for employees injured on the job (and how you can avoid the California Labor Commissioner's coming crackdown on workers compensation violations)
  • The proper notices you should give employees about the new requirements for hands-free devices if they use a cell phone while they're driving on business
  • What you must do now —even after you've offered California's required sexual harassment prevention training to your supervisors—to ensure that you'll remain in compliance with these rules
  • The new formats in which you must display employees' information on their pay stubs (and the new tax notice that you must include with your next round of W-2s and 1099s)
  • The 2007 court decisions—both state and federal—that will change the way you manage employees
  • Whether HR legislation that did not pass in California in 2007 could come back to haunt you down the road
