Recently, the California Supreme Court ruled that a labor union couldn't sue on behalf of employees claiming they were entitled to more than $10 million in lost wages, and more than $2.5 million in civil penalties, for missed meal and rest periods. This is good news for employers because the ruling could result in fewer class-action wage and hour lawsuits.

But don't let your guard down just yet. Complying with the state's meal-and-rest period rules (which remain legally unsettled) remains a source of confusion and frustration for many California employers - one that can easily lead to costly penalties.

Join us on January 27 for an in-depth, interactive 90-minute webinar all about the right way to handle meal and rest breaks. Our expert - a seasoned California-based labor and employment attorney - will provide expert insight on the common pitfalls to avoid. You'll learn:

  • Who's legally entitled to take meal and rest breaks, and how long these breaks must be
  • The proper way to record meal and rest periods
  • The potential pitfalls that could cause you grief if you're not meticulous about your recordkeeping practices
  • "Ensure" vs. "provide" - how far does your duty extend?
  • When an employee may waive his or her right to a meal break, and whether you can revoke that waiver under California law
  • What to do if an employee misses a scheduled break due to workload, insubordination, or forgetfulness
  • The state of the law in light of pending appeals in noteworthy cases involving missed meal and rest periods, such as Brinker Restaurant Corp. v. Superior Court
  • The most common ways employers open themselves up to meal-and-rest period violations - and how to avoid those sticky situations
  • The costly legal penalties you could face if you don't comply with break rules
